A genetic marker is a gene or DNA sequence at known location on a chromosome, that can be used as tool for identifying a species or individual.
Genetic markers are usually inherited.
Three types of Genetic Markers are:
1. Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms (RFLPs)
2. Simple Sequence Length Polymorphisms (SSLPs)
3. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs)
SSLPs are repeat sequence of DNA that show length variations.
Minisatellites, also known as variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs), in which the repeat unit is up to 25 bp in length;
Microsatellites or simple tandem repeats (STRs), whose repeats are shorter, usually dinucleotide or tetranucleotide units.
Applications of Genetic Markers:
DNA fingerprinting, Parental Verification.
Genetic disease diagnosis and analysis.
Cloning & Gene Transfer experiments.
