Today we’re working on attacking the turtle position in BJJ using the side breakdown method - often the easiest and quickest way to get someone down to a hip. Once they’re on a hip, mobility is greatly reduced and attack opportunities begin to open up. This breakdown addresses the key structural power of the turtle, the tight inside position that keeps the elbows and neck protected. Beginning behind the shoulder line with a posted leg, we use short grips and a shifting bodyweight that creates a quick opening for back attacks.
