2022 saw the transition of many music legends who joined the ancestors. Many thanks to Dwight Trible, Jazz Vocalist and Executive Director of The World Stage, for producing a beautiful joint tribute to two of them at the 2022 Leimert Park Jazz Festival on Saturday, August 27, 2022 -- Derf Reklaw (Sunrise: January 11, 1947 Sunset: February 24, 2022) and Barbara Morrison (Sunrise: September 10, 1949 Sunset: March 16, 2022).

Conney Willams @dredconney hosted the tribute and shared original poetry that he wrote for the occasion.

For Derf’s tribute, @munyungojackson performed Derf’s signature “bottle talk” by blowing into glass bottles, a technique that originated from the Hindewhu pipe used by the Pygmy people of Central Africa. Derf’s daughters, Amani Walker @amani.walker and Monilade Walker @icyit shared reflections on their dad.

For Barbara’s tribute, B’anca made loving remarks on behalf of the @barbaramorrisonperformingarts. @chloe.vaught, one of Barbara’s mentees, sang a lovely “In a Sentimental Mood” in A flat accompanied on piano by @hiromorzumi. Chloe shared that this was the first song she sang for Barbara when they met at Pip’s where Chloe worked as a server and Barbara had a weekly show.

The tribute culminated in the release of white balloons and doves.
