The German captain of a rescue ship who angered Italy's interior minister by bringing refugees and migrants to an Italian island has been moved to a secret location after receiving threats, according to a charity.
Carola Rackete, 31, was freed from house arrest on orders of an Italian judge on Tuesday, three days after her detention.
The European Union is spending tens of millions of euro on equipment and training for the Libyan coast guard, as part of a strategy aimed at stopping migration to Europe.
This incident has brought into sharp relief the gap between the European countries who want a closed-door policy and the activist groups who say a more humane approach is needed.
