Overreacting in front of your child about his/her food allergies heightens anxiety. Meantime, underreacting to a situation may leave them confused and unsure. Finding that a balance of allergy safety and life circumstances is not always easy.
Blogger and allergy mom Megan Lavin knows this well. She has great advice for finding the sweet spot in how we react with kids to food allergy situations.
Megan’s video covers:
• Before reacting, how to hear out your child and their feelings about a situation.
• If a teacher messes up, how to approach. Megan relates a pizza day [allergen alert!] incident that was infuriating. Hear about her ‘cooling off’ step – and why the teacher’s response was better than expected. It set the tone for future good communication.
• Underreacting: avoiding the perils of shrugging off a child’s concerns.
• When you ‘blow it’ (we all do): What to say to your child, how to truly hear them out
• Working with your child on solutions; this helps empower them.
