In the world of ornamental trees, Cercis canadensis, commonly known as Forest Pansy Redbud, or Eastern Redbud, is quite possibly among the top...if not the BEST! It flowers prolifically in Spring, but it doesn't end there!... the incredible heart-shaped leaves are a DEEP burgundy color which actually depending on the time of year and/or location, can range from a purplish color, to copper, to scarlet tones. Then as the year moves on towards the Summer, the leaves may turn a greenish/yellow color. This gives this incredible tree year round interest. Stylistically, it can be used in many different landscapes... cottage/country, modern, Mediterranean, English, formal, informal, woodland, and even Zen gardens. The Eastern Redbud is relatively small in size making it an excellent selection for the residential landscape, but can also serve as an accent tree to soften up a large wall in a commercial environment. The roots are non-invasive making it a good choice to use in a parkway or curb strip. It will attract desired wildlife such as birds and bees. It can be somewhat drought tolerant but will thrive best with moderate to regular water. Its best in USDA zones 5-9, but I have seen it thrive in 10 as well given the right environment. Cercis can also tolerate clay soils which is a major bonus here in Southern California. It is also deer resistant and is considered a lower maintenance tree. I am personally partial to a multi-trunk form of the Forest Pansy... and lit up at night, it just looks incredible! Upon maturity, it may reach up to about 30 feet tall, but is often kept pruned at 20 feet or below to keep the foliage looking nice and contained. We often have this tree available for purchase on our online store (see below).
Happy Planting!
