(18 Oct 2018) CARRIE UNDERWOOD ISN'T GIVING ANY HINTS ON BABY'S GENDER
Don't read too much into Carrie Underwood's clothing these days, because she's not dropping any hints about the gender of her baby.
Underwood, who was one of several women honored at the CMT Artists of the Year show on Wednesday, said that's a secret that they're going to keep for a while.
"I feel like, people are like, 'Oh, she's wearing a blue dress, it must be a boy!' And then next week, 'she's wearing a pink dress' and 'I think she said 'she.' No. We're just excited we're having a baby and we'll share that at some point, but I just feel like we just want to have a little something for ourselves for just a minute."
CMT saluted the ladies of country including Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini, Kimberly Schlapman and Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town and Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum. Underwood said the lack of women in country music is not a new problem.
"I feel like women in country music have always been underrepresented," Underwood said.
"It's not for a lack of talent. It's not for a lack of hard work because I know how hard each one of these ladies works and we have to work harder than everybody else. Which we're all up for it, you know what I mean."
Morris said the oft-cited claim that women listeners prefer male artists isn't true, despite it often being used by radio programmers for the reason why they don't play as many women on the radio.
"I think that's a swept under the rug fear tactic," Morris said. "I don't think it's real. I don't think any woman has said out loud, at least to me, 'I don't like to listen to women.' I think that's so ridiculous."
Loretta Lynn was also honored as a trailblazer, but Sissy Spacek, who won an Oscar for portraying the country icon in "Coal Miner's Daughter" said Lynn couldn't attend the event, so she accepted her honor in Lynn's place.
"She's just direct and authentic," Spacek said. "She tells it like it is. She can say things that you and I couldn't say, or would be afraid to say. She's just … There's just something about her, she's got it going on. She's strong and she's courageous. She's smart. She's creative and passionate about her work. When I saw her today she said, 'Come back, come back to the ranch and we'll write some songs and we'll go into our studio.' I said, 'I am there.'"
Scott said she hopes her oldest daughter learns a lot from seeing all those women on stage.
"I am hoping my little girl, my oldest, is here tonight and she's watching and looks and sees that she can dream as big and there's nothing about herself that she needs to make smaller," Scott said. "She can dream as big and as far and wide as she can possibly can."
