Krishna Iyer was the fifth son of Ramaswamy Iyer of Thirukkunram in the Udayarpalayam taluk of Tiruchirapalli district. Ramaswami Iyer was also a composer and musician at Thanjavur palace. He learned the intricacies of ‘ghanam’ from Bobbili Kesavayya and became proficient. ‘Ghanam’ is a unique style of singing and believed to have a dominant stance. Hence the title Ghanam got added to his name.
Ghanam Krishna Iyer was patronized by the rulers and zamindaars, Kabisthalam Ramachandra Moopanar, Kanji Kalyana Rangappa Udaiyar of Udaiyarapalyam, and Tiruvidai marudoor Amara Simha. He composed almost 80 padams.
Some of his famous and popular compositions are “Kondai Kulungave” in Kambhoji, “Parengum paartalum” in Kalyani, “Parimala natha” in Durbar, “Summa Summa varuguma” in Athana, “Thillaiappa unadu” in Kamavardhani and “Jaggajanani sukhapani” in Ratipatipriya.
