There's a number of ways that you can connect your guitar to Garageband but almost all of them are trash, with the exception of doing it properly, which is with an audio interface.
Normally, I run my guitar directly into my computer via an audio interface like the Scarlett 2i2 from Amazon, however, these days I have my Hughes and Kettner Switchblade 100W and Mesa Boogie 2x12 mic'd up with a Shure SM57 using a K&M mic stand.
That runs into the Scarlett like usual, and that's how I'm recording guitar these days. Doing it directly without an amplifier is fantastic, however, and you don't need to mic an amp.
