China has lashed out at Germany, after its foreign minister described Chinese President Xi Jinping as a "dictator". Beijing has branded the comment as "extremely absurd" and even considered it an open political provocation. China is Germany's top trade partner, but ties remain complicated. Germany published its comprehensive strategy towards China in July, identifying it as a partner, competitor and systemic rival.
