A secretive church has been linked to about half South Korea’s coronavirus cases. The Shincheonji Church of Jesus was thrust into the global spotlight after infections were first confirmed among worshippers in the southern city of Daegu. Founded in 1984, the sect has about 215,000 followers in South Korea and more overseas, according to media estimates. Frequently described as a cult by mainstream churches, the Shincheonji Church reportedly teaches worshippers that its founder Lee Man-hee is the second coming of Jesus Christ and that he will take 144,000 people with him to heaven on the Day of Judgment.
