Caution: Radiation Alert!
“The little sunfish” is an underwater robot searching for nuclear waste deep inside Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant that was destroyed during a 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The tiny robot is 12 inches long, maneuvers with five propellers, and is remote-controlled by four operators.
And it may have struck pay dirt.
Officials have identified a hardened substance that appears to be molten nuclear fuel from the meltdown. The findings could help advance the complicated clean-up process that’s expected to take decades.
At least seven other robots have broken down during the arduous underwater investigation process.
