Bringing a new ferret home is fun and exciting, it can also be overwhelming and scary for your new and old ferrets. Every ferret and their reactions to meeting new a ferrets is different. I’ve done seven introductions over the years and no two introductions have been the same, but there are some things to look out for to help determine what’s normal and what’s not.
Ferrets play rough with each other and this is normal. They will bite each other, roll each other over, and chase each. During this play your ferrets may make dook noises or little hiss sounds (not to be confused with all out hissing or “screaming”. This ferret behavior is normal and should not cause alarm. This type of play is often used to establish dominance or is a way for the ferrets to determine who is the “boss”. It is also just a way that your ferrets have fun.
However, if your ferrets are bleeding, screaming or continuously hissing these are signs your ferrets are upset. If one of your ferrets is shaking another and not letting go, this is a sign of fighting ferrets. If one of your ferrets is being chased and pooping or peeing because their scared, this is a sign your ferrets are fighting.
There are many other signs of ferret play and ferret fighting. Ferrets can get upset when a new ferret is brought into the home and introduced to quickly and sometimes a ferret just may not like the other ferret.
Below are links to some great websites/article that go deeper into ferret behaviors and the difference between ferrets fighting and ferrets playing.
