Controlled burns serve a critical ecologic purpose by assisting the regenerative process required for a healthy ecosystem. Sometimes called prescribed burns, controlled burns are used by USDA Forest Service, county governments, preservation-oriented nonprofits and others to maintain healthy ecological systems.

Experts are needed to administer them.

That is where Dr. Andrew Edelman’s fire ecology course in the biology department of the University of West Georgia comes in. Along with classroom learning and safety training, students gain hands-on experience by conducting controlled burns.

Natural resource groups such as U.S. Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and nonprofit groups such as the Nature Conservancy all require an understanding of controlled burns necessary for work as a private consultant, forester, or land manager.
