(24 Jan 2018) Kurdish protesters gathered outside the US embassies in Nicosia, Cyprus Wednesday to demonstrate against what they claim is the Turkish military's killing of civilians in Afrin, Syria.
The protesters, which were made up of around 350 people, burned images of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and and Russia and carried banners saying "fascist Turkey" and accused Erdogan of being a "terrorist."
The protesters gathered outside the American embassy as they believe the US has deserted Kurdish forces and were rallying for more help.
"Our purpose here is to stop this attack against the Kurdish, this is our message," said one demonstrator.
Turkey launched an incursion Saturday against Afrin, which is controlled by a Kurdish militia known as the People's Defense Units, or YPG.
The area of Afrin is a Syrian Kurdish enclave and the protesters claim Russia has betrayed them through allowing the recent military offensive to happen.
Ankara views the YPG as an extension of the Kurdish insurgency in Turkey.
The YPG forms the backbone of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
