In this video I give you a look at Blue Grama (Bouteloua gracilis) near the end of its first summer. Blue Grama is a warm season grass, and as such goes dormant as the weather cools in the fall. Many of the plants have developed seed heads, and will be allowed to spread seed naturally this year. There are some bare areas here and there mostly due to the shade from a tree where it is planted, and from logs that were on the side of the hill at the time of planting.
The blue grama seed took nearly a month to germinate the first time, and the second batch (when it was much warmer) germinated in about a week. Like other warm-season prairie grasses, it's not worth even sowing them until it is quite warm. Compared to buffalo grass (Buchloe dactyloides), blue grama is much more sparse after the first year, and it took longer to germinate.
