Oh He Dead w/ Ali McGuirk in the Haymarket Lounge
@ City Winery Boston
Hosted by City Winery Boston , Oh He Dead and Ali McGuirk
There's a little bit of magic and a whole lot of love in the rock 'n soul band Oh He Dead. Founded in 2014 by Andy Valenti and C.J. Johnson, the now five-piece group creates an "infectious and soulful sound" (The Washington Post) that leaves audience members wanting more of their "deliciously honest, raw, and sexy" music (The Dutch Guy, 2018).
The way in which C.J. "...maneuvers her powerful voice — a combination of Stevie Nicks and Tracy Chapman" (NPR), in conjunction with the deft guitaring of Alex Salser, the arresting harmonies of Andy Valenti, and the soulful rhythm of John Daise (bass) and Adam Ashforth (drums), is quickly garnering national attention. Mixing in healthy doses of classic R&B vibes, funk, and folk, it is no wonder that when attending a show, one can't help but "... bop and sing along with band members to this infectiously groovy tunes." (All Songs Considered.)
__________
Ali commands the room with her dynamic voice and heartfelt songwriting. Whether capturing hearts on tour as a solo artist, as a band leader or finding inspiration through unexpected collaborations with a wide range of artists, she has that rare ability to silence a room with just the first few words of a song. Steeped in R&B and soul but equally adept as a singer songwriter alone with her electric guitar her presence transcends both genre and crowd size. "No matter the genre, I'm seeking musical transcendence or bust," says Ali. "I want to move you and be moved by you. I want to get everyone in the room feeling the same thing."
Her debut album,"Slow Burn," released November 2017 featured her powerhouse band that includes members who have toured with the highest caliber of artists including D'angelo, Lalah Hathaway, Lettuce, Marcus King, Kendrick Lamar and more. Slow Burn was described as “wistful yet liberating; raw yet still devastatingly beautiful” (Candace McDuffie, Vanyaland) and garnered high praise throughout the New England music scene. She is currently at work on her next album with her touring band.
