STORYLINE
Portugal supporters celebrated twice on Wednesday as their team took a 2-1 first half lead against World Cup Group D opponents Mexico.
Football fans from Mexico and Portugal had gathered in front of a large screen in central Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday to watch their teams play the crucial tie at the Veltins Arena, which is located in the same city.
Midfielder Maniche opened the scoring for Portugal in the sixth minute and Simao Sabrosa doubled the lead with a penalty kick in the 24th.
But Francisco Fonsesca reduced the deficit to one with a 29th minute goal for Mexico.
Mexican coach Ricardo La Volpe knows his team must at least draw against Portugal in Wednesday's Group D finale at the Veltins Arena to guarantee a fourth straight trip to the second round.
La Volpe started cautiously with six defenders on the team.
Coach Ricardo La Volpe's left off midfielder Zinha and gave defender Francisco Rodriguez his first appearance in Germany.
Strikers Guillermo Franco and Ramon Morales were also out, while Jared Borgetti was injured.
Portugal had guaranteed a place in the second round with earlier wins over Angola and Iran.
Luiz Felipe Scolari changed almost half his team, leaving out the five players who have picked up a yellow cards. One more yellow would have kept
them out of the second round.
Out went playmaker Deco, winger Cristiano Ronaldo, all-time top scorer Pauleta, left-back Nuno Valente and defensive midfielder Francisco Costinha.
Mexico, with four points after two games, would win Group D by beating Portugal - current leader with six points.
A draw would give El Tri second place, and Mexico could lose and still advance if Iran beats Angola in Leipzig.
If Mexico loses and Angola wins, the group standings would go to a tiebreaker, starting with goal differential.
