PSEUDOHALIDES AND PSEUDOHALOGEN
A few ions are known, consisting of two or more electronegative atoms of which at least one is nitrogen, that have properties similar to those of halide ions.These ions are called pseudohalide ions.Pseudohalide ions are univalent and these form salts resembling halide salts. For example, sodium salts are soluble in water but the silver salts are insoluble.The
hydrogen compounds are acids like the halogen acids, HX.
Examples of pseudohalide ions are:
1. Cyanide ion (CN)
2. Cyanate ion (OCN)
3. Thiocyanate ion (SCN)
4. Selenocyanate ion (SeCN)
5. Azide ion (N3)
6. Isocyanide ion (NC)
7. Fulminate ion (ONe)
8. Isothiocyanate ion (NCS)
9.Tellurocyanate ion (TeC~)
10.Azido carbon disulphide ion
(SCSN3)
Pseudo Halides:
The salts formed by Pseudo halide ions are called pseudohalides.
Pseudohaloges:
As the dimers of halide ions are called halogens, the covalent dimers of the pseudohalide ions are called pseudohalogens or halogenoids.
Sofar only few of pseudohalogens have been isolated and characterised. The pseudo halogens known are:
Cyanogen (CNh
Thiocyanogen (SCNh .
Tellurocj'anogen (TeCNh
Oxycyanogen (OCNh
Selenocyanogen (SeCN)2
Azido carbon disulphide
(SCSN3h
The best known pseudohalide is C~. This resembles
Cl-, Br- and r in the following respects:
(i) It forms an acid, HCN.
(li) It can be oxidised to (CNh molecule. .
(Ui) It forms insoluble salts with Ag +, Pb2
+ and Hgi+.
(iv) It forms large number of complexes similar to halide
complexes, e.g.,
[Cu(CN)4f- and [CUCI4f-, [Co(CN)6]3- and [CoCI6]3-
(v) Inter-pseudohalogen compounds CICN, BrCN and ICN
can be formed.
(vi) AgCN is insoluble in water but soluble in ammonia like
AgCl.
(vii) HCN is oxidised like HCI.
