STORYLINE
President Bush pledged on Monday to help Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan fight Kurdish rebels, declaring them "an enemy of Turkey, a free Iraq and the United States."
In an Oval Office session, Bush offered intelligence sharing to help combat the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.
Bush also said top military figures from the United States and Turkey would be in more regular contact in an effort to track the movement of the guerrilla fighters.
Bush and Erdogan met amid rising tensions over Kurdish rebels staging attacks from northern Iraq.
Erdogan reiterated that the Turkish parliament had give the go ahead for a cross-border military incursion.
"As you know on the 17 October the Turkish parliament, overwhelmingly - almost every single member of the Turkish parliament gave the authority to our government the authority to do a cross-border military operation if necessary," said Erdogan.
He gave no indication about any possible attack, and emphasised cooperation with the United States.
Outside the White House, Kurdish protesters chanted, waved Iraqi Kurdistan flags and carried placards calling for Turkey not to take military action against the PKK.
"We just want dialogue; we don't feel that a military incursion is right for situation. We feel that Turkey is taking advantage of its military power and using it to intimidate the Kurds," said protester Fatimah Sandi.
However, Erdogan said that any Turkish military action would not target citizens but only the PKK.
About 50 Turks have been killed this month alone.
