'I missed my nap for this:' 101-year-old woman shatters the record in her age group by running 40.12 seconds 100-meter dash

A 101-year-old Louisiana woman just set a new record for her age group by completing the 100-meter race in just over 40 seconds.

While setting the new record, Julia 'Hurricane' Hawkins also became the oldest female athlete on Saturday to compete in the USA Track and Field Outdoors Masters Championship.

'[I] missed my nap for this,' Hawkins said during the event at Louisiana State University, which is not far from where she lives in Baton Rouge.

'I didn't feel like I was (breaking the record),' Hawkins told The Advocate.


While setting the new record, Hawkins also became the oldest female athlete on Saturday to compete in the USA Track and Field Outdoors Masters Championship

'Other times I felt like I was flying. This time, I wasn't feeling like I was going that fast.'

For Hawkins, running the 100-meter dash in 40.12 seconds during this weekend's event isn't even her personal best. Back in December, at the National Senior Games in Birmingham, Alabama, Hawkins ran the dash in 39.62 seconds.

During the December event, the centenarian won the 50 and the 100-meter dash.

Hawkins began her track and field journey just last year when she attending the State Olympics in Lake Charles.

She refuses to let her age slow her down as she rides her bicycle everyday and practices the 100-meter on her street.

Hawkins credits eating healthy, exercising and her family as her secret to living a long and prosperous life.

'I tell people the thing I recommend is to marry a good man. If you marry to a man for 70 years and have four wonderful children and then you have great grandchildren,' Hawkins told WBRZ.

'You can't ask much more than that ...so that's what I'm blessed with.'

The 101-year-old, who was born in Wisconsin in 1916, said she likes impressing her family which include four children, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
