In this video I am harvesting a Yellow Watermelon that was hidden in the raspberry patch. I did not know the plant had any fruit on it. The plant was watered at the time it was put in the ground. The way this watermelon plant survived was from the woodchip mulch. The mulch kept the plant most the entire season. The woodchips soaks up the water when it rains. When the temperature is hot sone of that water is released from the woodchips. This is one reason why I went to the food forest method. The woodchips also kept the weeds down so they did not take nutrients away from the plant. The woodchip garden method acts like a real forest where it depends on the mulch and the rain. Having the mulch helps gardeners out because it regulates the moisture level in the garden. When the woodchips break down it provides the best fertilizer around. The watermelon grew to 25 pounds because of those nutrients. Every time it rains the plants are being fertilized. Every year the soil is going to get better.
