Learn how to say hello in Japanese with three different ways to say how are you in Japanese for both formal and informal situations

To say how are you in Japanese, you’ll use the Japanese phrase Genki desu ka? which is appropriate for most settings. Pay attention to the intonation however as Japanese questions require speakers to inflect a rising intonation at the end of the phrase to signal it’s a question and not a command or statement. If you want to make it more formal, add the Japanese honorific prefix “O” to the beginning of the phrase to confer respect. For less formal situations, it’s acceptable to shorten genki desu ka to a simple Genki. This is a common approach in Japan for casual situations with friends or family where locals will drop words out or shorten phrases as a sort of slang.
