llinois Jacquet was a pioneering jazz tenor saxophonist, known for his powerful, honking sound that helped shape the development of both rhythm and blues (R&B) and rock and roll. He gained fame with his explosive solo on “Flying Home” while playing in Lionel Hampton’s band in 1942, a performance often considered one of the first rock and roll sax solos. Jacquet’s aggressive, energetic playing style had a huge influence on later saxophonists in jazz, R&B, and rock. His work bridged the gap between swing and more modern jazz styles, and he was a key figure in popularizing the saxophone as a leading instrument in American popular music.
