In this video I examine the role of Gypsy musicians in Hungarian music past and present. I look at the Liszt controversy; he claimed that all of the beauty of Hungarian music came from the Gypsies. Certainly they were the main purveyors of music in that country for centuries, and were central to the development of Verbunkos, Csardas and Magyar Nota.
Bartok and Kodaly saw folk music as being central to the culture and identity of the Hungarian people, and the Gypsies as a malign influence, cheapening and commercialising the "pure" village music.
With the communist takeover, folk music was promoted for propaganda purposes, and State folk ensembles were established, as well as regular work being guaranteed for Gypsy musicians in Budapest restaurants.
Then the Tanchaz (Dance House) movement began, bringing village music and dance into the towns, and into the hands of ordinary people. This movement still thrives today.
At the end of the video I get the view of Tcha Limberger- a Sinti Gypsy who, thought not Hungarian, is a leading performer of, and advocate for, Magyar Nota.
I have a book of "Hungarian Fiddle Tunes" published by Schott- a collection of 143 tunes representing the whole range of Hungarian tune and dance types, each recorded on mp3.
