Being a conductor, composer and musical director, Joaquim Luís Gomes was an important name of the 20th century portuguese music!
He composed several movie soundtracks, specially in the decades of 1950, 1960 and 1970. "Justiça do Céu" (1962), "A Última Pega" (1964) or "Passagem de Nível" (1965) are some of the examples of his contribute on movie soundtracks.
Joaquim Luís Gomes also used to work for RTP (Rádio Televisão Portuguesa) as conductor, composer and musical director.
His contribution for the portuguese music was not only related with the classical music. He arranged several fado songs by giving them a chamber and orchestral tone, elevating this characteristic portuguese musical genre. For example, in "Sucessos em Orquestrações" (1977). Joaquim Luís Gomes also directed the Orquestra Típica Scalabitana (Santarém) from 1958 until 1965, where he developed an hybrid work, arranging folklore music from Ribatejo, adopting it to classical and orchestral music. He recorded one album with the Orquestra Típica Scalabitana entitled "Ribatejo" (1964).
He should also be remembered for his contribution with the biggest diva of fado, Amália Rodrigues, with whom he worked.
