So you want to buy a BMW 135i / 335i / 535i . I have owned both N54 cars and an N55 car. They're BMWs so we need to talk about any reliability issues straight away.
My experience with the N54 car. If you're planning on keeping the car stock, an n54 car would be great. You can get a great deal, they're fairly reliable. At around 100k miles you need to replace the water pump and radiator. Both realivitly small services if you go to a BMW tech instead of the dealer. If stock, the N55 car will feel very similar and be newer. That may allow you to find one with lower miles.
If you plan on chipping the car and taking advantage of the factory turbo/turbos, I'd recommend the N55 car. I have noticed that N54 cars heat up the spark plugs and coil packs and blow them out. I was eating 1-2 coil packs a month on my modded N54 car. Meanwhile I have had zero issues with my N55 car.
If you're planning to fully build the car and go huge power, if you prefer the twin turbo setup go N54. If you want a single turbo, you can convert the N54 relatively easily or stick with the N55. At this high power level you need to upgrade the fuel pump, clutch and flywheel, coil packs and add port injection so the N54 coil pack gremlin I had would go away. At this power level its just deciding if you want twins, stick with the N54. If not you can chose either car.
Whats the difference? I think the N54 coupe looks better, while the N55 sedan looks better. But since that's subjective, that's up to you to decide.
Whats not subjective is the engine. As far as the engine, the N54 is an inline 6, 3 liter, twin turbo plant. While the N55 is an inline 6, 3 liter, single turbo plant.
Decide on how much power you want to make and chose accordingly.
Most importantly, drive and see both in person, that will make your decision a lot easier.
