Sharbat Gula, the ‘green-eyed’ Afghan girl from National Geographic’s 1985 magazine cover is in news again. Where is she now? Gula became arguably Afghanistan's most famous refugee after US photographer Steve McCurry captured her portrait in a Pakistan camp in the 1980s and it was published on the front cover of the National Geographic magazine. Her photo, became a symbol of Afghanistan’s wars. At the time, she was an adolescent girl with green eyes who donned a red headscarf in the iconic photo. In the picture, she is seen looking intensely at the camera. Italy Prime Minister Mario Draghi's office has recently issued one statement. She, has been given safe haven by Italy after fleeing the Taliban. According to the statement, the government intervened after Sharbat Gula asked for help to leave Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover of the country in August, adding that her arrival was part of a broader programme to evacuate and integrate Afghan citizens. The Italian government will now help to get her integrated into life in Italy. The Italian government’s actions were met with widespread appreciation from internet users. Sharbat, who is 49-years-old now, was only 12 when the photo was taken. She is a widowed mother of four now. In August 2021, Italy claimed they evacuated nearly 5,000 Afghans. This is reportedly the most refugees evacuated by a country in the European Union. Sharbat’s arrival in Rome came nearly three months after the United States completed their full troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
