Nocturne is performed here by the Degani Piano Trio with Rachel Quinn on piano, Alan Smale on violin and Annette Cleary on cello.
Nocturne was composed in 1992 and could be described as expressionist or post impressionist. The two visuals that come to mind are Van Gogh's Starry Night which captures the eeriness of the nocturnal, and Munch's famous Scream which is more obviously emotional and implies elements of nightmares and Alfred Hitchcock's tension-filled thrillers. This latter mood does not permeate the piece however, as a contrasted lighter, more playful mood emerges which pays homage to Copland's wonderful Vitebsk trio.
