"The Internationale" is a socialist anthem dating back to 1871, written by Eugène Pottier and Pierre De Geyter. During the Great October Socialist Revolution of 1917, it became one of the anthems of the revolutionaries alongside the Worker's Marseillaise. After the victory of the Great October Socialist Revolution and the establishment of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, it became the national anthem of the Soviet Union until 1944 when it was replaced by the iconic "State Anthem of the Soviet Union", after which it remained in popular use as the anthem of the CPSU.
