'Wake Up and SEE' provides a look at AMD symptoms through the eyes of someone with the disease and emphasizes steps for testing and early detection. Share this video to help spread awareness of a disease that can rob the elderly of their vision... and their independence!
The Angiogenesis Foundation created this animation to raise public awareness about age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the importance of vision testing, and the benefits of antiangiogenic treatments. AMD affects more than 30 million people worldwide and is the leading cause of blindness in people over age 50 in developed countries. Most vision loss occurs in people with the 'wet' form of AMD, in which abnormal, leaky blood vessels proliferate in the eye and damage the retina. Angiogenesis (new blood vessel growth) is the common denominator underlying some of society's most feared diseases, including AMD, cancer, skin and neurological conditions.
This animation is intended for members of the general public, patients, and their advocates, and has been recorded in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. Wake up and SEE is the newest addition to Science of AMD, a comprehensive, interactive educational site from the Angiogenesis Foundation that includes information on AMD risk factors, diagnosis and treatments, scientific illustrations, a fact sheet and patient brochure, a white paper based on an international AMD expert summit, and other valuable resources. Science of AMD was created to increase awareness of AMD, educate the public about the role of angiogenesis in the disease, and to provide evidence-based information on antiangiogenic treatments that can prevent or even reverse vision loss in people with AMD.
