Itrion, also known as Pasteli today, are essentially just honey and sesame bars and they’re a popular snack in Greece even today! I actually have one right here because I became obsessed with them when I was digging in Greece. Like the Tiger Nut Balls in the first ancient eats episode, they’re also considered an early type of energy ball because of the powerhouse ingredients in it.

These mentions of Itrion span quite a few centuries in Greek history, showing that it seemed to be quite the staple in the ancient Greek diet. Aristophanes and Sophoclese were alive in the 4th century BCE, whereas Athenaeus’ Deipnosophistae dates from the 3rd century CE. In Ancient Greece, Itrion was so popular that the people who sold it had their own name: “itriopoleis” i.e., the ‘itrion-sellers’.
