Gunung Arong stands at a mere 240 m, which classifies it as a hill, to be honest. However, this 'mountain' packs a punch because in order to reach the summit, we need to ascend 200+ m in elevation within 950 m in distance. Yup, it was steeeeep all the way to the peak.
I did not have to suffer for too long because it took me about half an hour to reach the top.
The actual plan was to do a transverse hike from Hutan Taman Negeri Gunung Arong to the beach, effectively making a looped route. However, the tide was high that day (2.8 m), so the guides had us do an out and back route.
This hike is my favorite amongst all the places we went to this weekend. The view is spectacular! It is a welcome relief for not having to hike such an arduous distance and elevation for a great panoramic view. And there is a lookout tower to enjoy a 360° view of the Mersing seaside.
Gunung Arong is truly an instant gratification hike: steep but short, with a great payoff at the peak!
