"Giannis (feat. Anderson .Paak)" by Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
Curated by: Andrew Gale

Genre: #rap
I realize I just wrote on Madlib recently, and if it’s unclear from my last post, Madlib is my favorite producer of all-time. Freddie Gibbs is also an excellent rapper and one of the best to have blessed the mic in the last decade. Cocaine Pinata was arguably the best hip-hop album of 2014, and a second album from this duo is special and should be treasured because Madlib is notoriously introverted. I preordered the special edition vinyl from rappcats.com, and if you’re a fan I suggest you support. The underground doesn’t get paid the way the mainstream does, and this shit is art. Anyways, this track is proof that Madlib is like fine wine, and he was already the talent equivalent of elite Bordeaux when he entered the scene.
I have to mention Anderson .Paak too, because he’s the shit. I think he’s appearing here because he fits, but also because he wants more Madlib beats. Their previous collab “The Waters” is one of my favorite .Paak tracks. I have a buddy who thinks Freddie Gibbs sounds better over “harder production”, but I have to disagree. In my 100% correct opinion, his aggressive delivery excels over Madlibs smooth beats. It’s like mixing sweet and savory, it doesn’t make sense, but it works.
“Giannis” is Madlib gold, with a hard ass intro verse from Gibbs, and a scene-stealing performance by Anderson .Paak. His sing-songy flow infuses into the instrumental, synergy that hasn’t been seen since the Toyota Prius mixed gas and energy. Madlib’s beat features drums that smack like a hit of crack, some plinky synths, and what sounds like a chopped .Paak vocal sample in the background, or him moaning. Mix all this together and you’ve got an excellent album single, from what will likely be album of the year.
