Government enterprise Central Electronics Limited (CEL), has handed over ten solar-powered rickshaws to the rickshaw pullers at IIT Delhi. The solar rickshaws will be operated within the IIT campus. CEL has designed and fabricated specialised flexible solar panels for use as roof of the rickshaws. These solar panels provide continuous charging to the batteries throughout the day and effectively double the distance that the rickshaws can cover daily. This reduces the need for the physical effort by the rickshaw puller, as well as an increase in his daily earnings. Meanwhile, the rickshaw has a higher battery life as the system avoids frequent deep discharge cycles.
