As soon as you pass through the main portal of the Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Dear Lady) in Munich, you'll encounter something rather unusual: the devil's Footprint. Legend has it that this footprint belongs to the devil himself!
According to legends in 1468, the architect Jörg von Halsbach was seeking funds to construct the new cathedral in Munich. Failing to secure the necessary finances, he made a pact with the devil. In exchange for the funds, the devil requested that the cathedral have no windows—darkness should prevail.
When the construction was complete, von Halsbach led the devil inside to inspect his work and demonstrate that he had upheld his end of the bargain. Although there was light, it appeared that there were no windows. The devil was satisfied. However, when he took another step forward, he realized that the windows were indeed there, but they were concealed by columns. Enraged at being deceived, he stamped his foot, leaving behind a permanent black footprint on the floor.
Next time you visit the Frauenkirche, keep an eye out for the devil's footprint—it's a fascinating piece of Munich's history!
