Former child star Johnny Crawford, who is remembered for his five season stint (from 1958-63) as Mark McCain, the son of Chuck Connors on ABC western The Rifleman, died Thursday. He was 75. In 2019, it was revealed that Crawford had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Born on March 26, 1946, Crawford began his career as at age nine as one of the original Mouseketeers in 1955. His first notable performance as a child star was in a Lux Video Theatre live production of “The Little Boy Lost” in 1956. That opened the door to a series of TV guest spots on series like The Lone Ranger, Cavalcade of America, Climax!, The Frank Sinatra Show, The Millionaire, The Danny Thomas Show and Wagon Train before debuting on The Rifleman. During his run on The Rifleman, Crawford had a recording career that resonated with the teen audience and generated four Billboard Top-40 hits including the single "Cindy's Birthday. ” His other hits included "Rumors" (peaked at number 12, 1962), "Your Nose is Gonna Grow" (number 14, 1962), and "Proud" (number 29, 1963. Earlier, Crawford reached a career zenith with an Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor (Continuing Character) in a Dramatic Series in 1959 for The Rifleman. Following The Rifleman, Crawford guest-starred in TV shows like Mr. Novak, Mister Ed, Rawhide, The Donna Reed Show, the original Hawaii Five-O and The Big Valley. While enlisted in the Army for two years, Crawford worked on training films as a production coordinator, assistant director, script supervisor, and an occasional actor. In 1973, Crawford segued to the big screen opposite Victoria Principal in The Naked Ape. And his later TV show guest spots included Little House on the Prairie and Murder, She Wrote. In the 1990s, he led the Johnny Crawford Orchestra. Survivors include his wife Charlotte Samco, whom he married in 1995, and his brother.
