On July 17, 1996, the Tamil Nadu government renamed Madras to Chennai, aligning the city’s name with its historical and cultural roots. This change occurred under the joint government of the Bharatiya Janata Party and DMK. The name "Madras" was believed to be derived from the fishing village Madrasapatnam. Chennai, situated on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, is a major cultural, economic, and educational hub in South India. According to the 2011 Indian census, it ranks as the fourth largest city and the fourth most populous urban agglomeration in India. The city is renowned for its culinary delights, including idli, sambar rice, dosa, bajji, and pongal, as well as its ancient temples, which draw visitors from around the world.
