STORYLINE:
In a remote mountain village in Bosnia, members of top war crimes fugitive General Ratko Mladic's clan reacted furiously on Wednesday to news that he may have been arrested.
Mladic's birthplace, Bozinovici, lies in the hills just above the town of Kalinovik, around 150 kilometres (94 miles) north of Sarajevo.
Villagers were reluctant to talk, but one man said that Mladic had only been defending his people.
"This cannot happen. Someone had to be the leader of the Serb people. Why can't they catch any Muslims? Who was killing the Serbs?" said another.
Serb security officials insisted on Wednesday that Mladic had been located and that authorities were trying to persuade him to give himself up.
Chief UN war crimes prosecutor Carla Del Ponte said that although Mladic was "within reach" of the Serbian authorities, he "remains at large."
She said Serbian officials told her no negotiations were underway for the surrender of the Bosnian Serb wartime commander, who has been indicted for genocide for his role in Bosnia's 1992-95 conflict.
