Dancing to her own rhythm ; gliding seamlessly from phrase to phrase , Mina Lakeia is the truth . Born in Berkely and raised in Oakland , CA during a period of political unrest and social injustices , Mina Lakeia discovered a love of poetry which aided her in expressing the colorful environment in which she lived. Influenced by her grandfather Floyd Beck ,who was a musician in the 70's signed to Epic Records & CBS records, and her electronica / international music composing uncle Thavius Beck , her poetry transitioned fluidly to music . In 1997 she was a full fledged songwriter and lyricist . She then began performing in local venues in the early 2000's , and collaborating with a multitude of artist through out the United States .
