Super Mario RPG was birthed from an unpresedented collaboration between Square and Nintendo. The game has similarities to other Square RPGs (such as Final Fantasy) with a story and action-based gameplay derived from the Mario franchise. The game was welcomed with critical acclaim, and was praised for its pseudo-3D graphics. The game spawned both the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi sub-series', both of which put their own spin on the Mario RPG formula.
