Naomi Judd, of Grammy-winning duo The Judds, has died at age 76, and many of you who loved her singing are mourning. While she is known for sharing her challenges with anxiety and depression, we want to remember her during happier times.
On January 11, 1946, in Ashland, Kentucky, Judd was born to Pauline Ruth 'Polly' (née Oliver; 1927–2019) and Charles Glen Judd (1924–1984). Her father was the proprietor of a petrol station. Brian (1948–1965), her younger brother, died of leukemia at the age of 17 in 1965. Christina Ciminella (later Wynonna Judd), Naomi Judd's first child, was born when she was 18 years oldJudd raised both daughters as a single parent after the birth of her daughter Ashley (April 1968), who went on to become a film and stage actress, and the end of her marriage to Michael Ciminella. She first attended nursing school at California's College of Marin while living in nearby Lagunitas, California, and later began a successful singing career with daughter Wynonna.
She founded the Judds, an extremely successful singing duo, with her daughter Wynonna Judd.
The Judds, country music's most famous mother–daughter duo, had twenty top-10 hits (including fifteen at number one) and were undefeated at all three major country music awards events for eight consecutive years. In addition, the duo received five Grammy Awards and a slew of additional accolades. Judd also won a Grammy for country song of the year for the Judds' smash "Love Can Build a Bridge" as a songwriter.
The Judds' career came to an abrupt end in 1991, after selling more than 20 million albums and videos in seven years and being at the zenith of their success. Naomi Judd was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. The band's Final Tour was the highest-grossing act of all time, and their farewell show was the most lucrative musical event in cable pay-per-view history. Judd established the Naomi Judd Education and Research Fund in 1991 to promote awareness of Hepatitis C, and she draws on her experiences as a spokeswoman for the American Liver Foundation.
