The Duke and Duchess of Orlando are throwing a festival in honor of the end-of-year harvest and invite King Edward II of England and his wife, Queen Isabella of France to help celebrate. Attending the royal couple are many members of their court and kingdom, including the King’s unpopular “companion” and an ambitious Lord Chamberlain who smells opportunity.
In order to control flaring tempers, the King and Queen are convinced to take part in a game of battle chess in the Orlando tradition. The match begins friendly enough but things quickly spiral out of control as the stakes are raised and a story of betrayal and corruption unfolds on the chessboard. Just remember: all is fair in love and war!
