Farmer Tawfik is delighted: his olive trees are flourishing, thanks to a new 100% natural compost produced in his region, the Siliana governorate in north-western Tunisia.

The compost is the idea of Hassan Mrabeti, a young engineer in design who spent six years in unemployment. Taking advantage of the empty cones from Aleppo pine trees leftover after collecting their seeds, he decided to reuse them instead of burning them. IFAD and the Tunisian government joined forces to support him in developing his idea into a successful business.

His innovative and 100% natural compost is now helping vulnerable communities prosper in a sustainable way – while also benefiting the environment in one of Africa’s driest country.
