United Nations, New York, 10 August 2009 - Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger is the first of eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). World Bank estimates show that 1.4 billion people in the developing world were living in extreme poverty in 2005. Still with all the bad, the MDG target of cutting in half the proportion of people in the developing world living on less that $1 US a day by 2015 remains within reach for the world as a whole.
