Trump's first impeachment - 2020
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., insisted that Democrats did not want to start an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, but his actions toward Ukraine ultimately forced their hand. “We have worked hard to find common ground with this president,” Gillibrand said, but, she continued, “President Trump’s brazen misconduct forced this issue,” posing a “moral challenge” to every member of Congress. “The American people can see through these lies,” she said, adding that Republicans would be remembered as being complicit in this trial. House managers and the president’s legal team each delivered their closing arguments in the impeachment trial on Feb. 3 before senators began to weigh in with debate on whether to remove Trump from office. In December, the House of Representatives charged him with two articles of impeachment -- abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. After the Senate on Friday voted to bar new witness testimony and subpoenas for documents, Trump’s acquittal has seemed all but assured.
