At a memorial service in London's St. Paul's Cathedral, rose petals flutter down from the dome - one for each victim.
2: FRANCE MEMORIAL 2
In France, the US ambassador pays tribute to the victims at the foot of a replica of the Statue of Liberty.
And in an emotional tribute, President Chirac says the French stand by America.
3: MOSCOW WREATH LAYING
In Russia, the US ambassador acknowledges America isn't alone in facing terror.
He places a wreath at a pedestrian underpass in downtown Moscow, where a bomb killed 13 people two years ago.
4: ITALY POPE
At the Vatican, Pope John Paul the Second tells pilgrims there is no justification for terrorism.
But he calls on the international world to urgently end the injustices that foment it.
5: KABUL EMBASSY & EXHIBITION
And a somber memorial is held at the US embassy in Kabul, which reopened after the fall of the Taliban.
The capital also hosts a 9/11 exhibition - for many Afghans a chance to see the devastation for the first time.
