Within this presentation, you’ll learn of the bidirectional connection between alcohol intoxication and traumatic brain injury. Alcohol intoxication is often associated with unintended injuries, including traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and a history of TBI is associated with increased risk of subsequent substance use. Prior research findings relevant to this relationship will be presented, including specific factors related to post-TBI alcohol use, and the potential impact of such use on TBI outcomes.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion, participants should be able to:
1. Identify the associations between alcohol intoxication and TBI.
2. Describe the risk factors associated with alcohol use following TBI.
3. Identify the potential factors mediating post-TBI substance use.
4. Match appropriate education/intervention based on severity of substance use and severity of TBI residual symptoms.
