So, this danger looms in the background, but the court of King Viserys is more interested in their own selfish agendas. [SHOTS: Otto, Corlys, Alicent] Most of this episode features everyone angling around the King like it’s the first act of Richard the Third. [CLIP: McKellen as Richard].

Lord Corlys Valaryon is the only one taking the Crab Feeder threat seriously. [CLIP: Corlys Valaryon] The Master of Ships and Lord of Driftmark (also known as the “Sea Snake”) has good reason to be upset, because this threat affects him and his lands directly. He wants the King to allow him to take drastic action. [CLIP: Corlys wants to seize the Stepstones] Viserys doesn’t want war with the Free Cities; it’s never happened before. [CLIP: Beesbury explains what would happen in open war with Free Cities]

As Corlysa says in this episode, his family is the only othe rhouse to escape the dom of Valyria. And because they hail form essos, he’s not a pasty white guy like all the other lords of westeros. He rules an island called the ddriftmark, which is between Dragonstone and King’s landing.

Corlys doesn’t take this rejection well, but he’s nice enough to let us all know that Prince Daemon Targaryen [CLIP: Matt Smith as Daemon] has taken control of Dragonstone and fortified it with the Gold Cloaks. You’ll likely remember Dragonstone from Thrones, it was used as a stronghold by Stannis “Father of the Year Baratheon” [CLIP: Stannis on Dragonstone] as well as Daenerys Targaryen. [CLIP: Dany on Dragonstone]. In Martin’s lore, it became the home of House Targaryen after Daenys foresaw the Doom of Valyria and got out of dodge. Those who left brought several dragons with them, but only Balerion the Black Dread survived. The dragons Meraxes and Vhagar were hatched there, and the castle of Dragonstone was built and shaped with Valyrian magic. Aegon the Conquerer planned his conquest from this location, and Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar where the three dragons that helped him.

Viserys’ heir, Rhaenyra, has been listening this whole time, and she gives her own solution. [CLIP: “You have dragon riders…’] Viserys shoots this down in patronizing fashion [CLIP: “It’s not so simple’].

Rhaenyra is not going to be content to sit at court and play games. She wants to be in on the action personally, and preferably on dragonback. We also can’t forget that her inner fire is being stoked by the loss of her mother. Either no one gets that, or no one cares. Rhaenyra, a cross between Arya Stark [CLIP: GOT Arya Stark] and Daenerys Targaryen [CLIP: GOT Dany saying Dracarys] is going to have to take things into her own hands. [CLIP: High School Musical 2].

The King fobs her off on the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Harold Westerling [CLIP: Harold Westerling]. They have a member of the Kingsguard to replace, and because this new member will be guarding Rhaenyra personally, they all think that she should be in on the selection. Conveniently, it gives her something to do.

Doug: Why is there a vacancy in the Kingsguard?

Glad you asked, Doug. The previous Lord Commander, Ser Ryam Redwyne, has recently passed away peacefully. He served under both Jaeherys and Viserys, and was considered to be the greatest knight of his day. He briefly served Jaeherys as Hand of the King, but was thought to be one of the worst Hands that the realm has ever had. His legend persisted all the way into the Thrones era; when the Stark children played pretend as kids, the role of Ryam was taken by none other than Jon Snow. [CLIP: Jon Snow]
