The Viking exploration of North America, led by Norse explorers from Greenland, occurred around the 10th century. Leif Erikson is credited with being the first European to reach North America, landing in a place he called Vinland, believed to be in present-day Newfoundland, Canada. The Norse established a settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows, which has been archaeologically verified as a Norse site. This exploration predated Columbus by nearly 500 years. Although the settlement was short-lived, likely due to conflicts with Indigenous peoples and logistical challenges, the Viking voyages demonstrated their advanced seafaring skills and adventurous spirit. The discovery of Vinland is chronicled in the Icelandic Sagas, which provide a mix of history and legend about these early explorations.
